Alexander, Altland among local area's state champs
Barolette, Lino also win; MOC is tonight
BY TIM MORRIS
Staff Writer

TIM MORRIS Mater Dei's Marie Walsh added another Non-Public Group B 1,600-meter title to her impressive résumé on Saturday in Egg Harbor Township.
Donna Alexander will look to extend her triple jump championship streak tonight at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions.

The Matawan senior added the NJSIAA State Group II title to her championship haul this spring by jumping 38-11 at South Plainfield. The mark stood up as the second best performance at all of the State Group meets over the weekend, trailing only the 40-0 1/4 of Group IV champion Stephanie McIntyre of South Brunswick. That makes Alexander one of the MOC favorites tonight at Frank Jost Field in South Plainfield.

Also collecting a State Group II title over the weekend was Raritan's Christine Altland. The Rocket senior ran the 1,600 meters in 5:04.99, almost five second ahead of the field.

Matawan, with Erin Scurry placing third in the javelin (122-5) and fifth in the shot put (35-10), to go along with Alexander's win, finished fifth with 26 points.

In Group III, Holmdel's George Galasso had a big weekend. The sophomore finished second to Red Bank Regional's Dennie Waite in a quick 1,600. He ran 4:17.08 to Waite's 4:16.84.

Galasso came back on Saturday to win his first State Group title when he won the 3,200 meters in 9:20.63.

Egg Harbor Township High School hosted the State Group IV and Non-Public A and B championships.

St. John Vianney sprinter Paul Barolette turned to the officials after the finish of the 100-meter dash with his index finger pointing upward, looking to verify that he had won the race. He had. His 10.95 made him the only sprinter under 11.00.

His SJV teammates Chris Favaloro (13-6) and Mike Reese (13-0) are also going to the MOC in the pole vault. They finished second and third as the Lancers finished fifth with 26 points.

Running in the heat of the day on Friday, Mater Dei's Marie Walsh didn't let that stop her from winning a second straight Non-Public B 1,600-meter title. After taking the lead 600 meters in the race, Walsh had the track to herself en route to her 5:09.15 victory.

"With the weather, I didn't know what to expect," said the Seraph. "I'm happy with my time."

As for her decisive move on the second lap, "I was feeling good, so I said take it," she said.

Walsh had a busy weekend, running second in the 3,200 (11:36.05) and fifth in the 800 (2:20.78).

Striking gold for the Mater Dei boys was shot-putter Ryan Lino. He won by almost two feet with his 47-4 1/2.

Lino helped the Seraph boys finish second in their group with 69 points. Pingry won the B title with 84.

Patrick O'Boyle placed in three events. He was runner-up in the 800 (1:59.94), third in the javelin (153-6) and anchored the 4x400 relay team that finished third (3:42.06). Pat McGee, Gervin Mendonca and Mike Woyak ran the first three legs for the Seraphs. McGee finished fourth in the 400 intermediate hurdles (1:01.16) while Woyak was sixth in the 800 (2:05.43).

Also placing for the Seraph boys were Curtis Jensen, fourth in the 3,200 (10:07.05), Mike Donato, fourth in the shot put (43-3 1/2), Mario Cornacchia, fourth in the javelin (139-4), Dan Yerves (122-4) and Chris Theobald (110-1), third and fourth in the discus, Anthony Albanese, fourth in the triple jump (39-6 3/4), and Mike Amato, fifth in the high jump (5-6).

Everyone who finished in the Top 6 in their State Group last weekend advanced to tonight's MOC at Jost Field.
