Making art with scraps and stamps
 | | Untitled Collage, 10" x 11" |
| Collages, drawings and mixed-media sculptures by Daniel Schroll are on exhibit in the Nilson Gallery of the Monmouth Museum in Lincroft.
"Daniel Schroll Collages" will run through June 24 at the museum, located on the campus of Brookdale Community College.
Schroll, Red Bank, is an artist and professor of graphic design at Brookdale Community College. Prior to joining the faculty at Brookdale, Schroll was an adjunct at Seton Hall and did printing work (silkscreen) for Andy Warhol.
In an artist's statement, Schroll explains his focus on collage:
"I'm fascinated with marks - handmade and found. I choose to work in collage because I can't duplicate the color and surface I'm looking for and trying to create. I started collecting stamps due to the color, typeface and image.
"People started putting scrap paper and papers with interesting surfaces into my mailbox. I also collected old postcards that had interesting handwriting. Some scraps I saved for 15 or 20 years before using them.
"The composition is the most important part to me. Gluing down shape onto shape, creating positive and negative spaces, is a simple process based on the fundamentals of 2-D design."
The museum's Main and Nilson galleries are open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $6; members, Brookdale students, staff and children under age 2 are admitted free. For more information, call the museum at (732) 747-2266 or visit www.monmouthmuseum.org.
