Gregory J. Cannon, Matawan, received a juris doctorate degree in law at the spring commencement exercises at Villanova (Pa.) Law School. He is the son of Diane and Michael Cannon.

Heather D. Jakub, New Monmouth section of Middletown, received a bachelor of arts degree in history at the spring commencement ceremonies at Castleton (Vt.) State College. A 2002 graduate of Middletown high School South, she is the daughter of Debbie and Ray Jakub.

John P. Kelly, Middletown, received a bachelor of arts degree in economics and history at the spring commencement ceremonies at Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pa. A graduate of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, Rumson, he is the son of Diane and William Kelly.

Berkeley College announced the following local students who received degrees at the spring commencement exercises:

Stefanie Bradshaw, Middletown, a bachelor's degree in business administration from the Garret Mountain campus, West Paterson;

Demonica Britt, Holmdel, a bachelor's degree in business administration from the Garret Mountain campus;

Gregg Colacichi, Middletown, a bachelor's degree in business administration - management from the New York City campus;

Michael Reyes, Matawan, an associate's degree in business administration - information system management from the New York City campus;

Cristel Valentin, Hazlet, a bachelor's degree in business administration - marketing from the Garret Mountain campus; and

Danielle Zirino, Holmdel, a bachelor's degree in business administration from the Garret Mountain campus.

The University of Scranton, Pa., announced the following local students who received degrees at the spring commencement ceremonies:

Julianne C. Burok, Matawan, a bachelor of science degree summa cum laude in elementary education;

Rachel M. Chibnik, Middletown, a bachelor of science degree in secondary education - English;

Steven B. Cook, Lincroft section of Middletown, a bachelor of arts degree in communication;

Kristen A. Levey, Lincroft, a bachelor of science degree in nursing;

Kathleen E. Malloy, Middletown, a bachelor of science degree summa cum laude in nursing;

Vincent Solomeno III, Hazlet, a bachelor of science degree magna cum laude in political science, Honors Program;

Charles D. Tacopino, Hazlet, a bachelor of science degree in accounting;

Daniel J. Bryant, Leonardo section of Middletown, has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Averett University, Danville, Va. He received a bachelor of science degree in business administration at the April commencement exercises.

Alyson Hebding, Matawan, has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University, South Orange. The marketing major is a 2003 graduate of Matawan Regional High School, Aberdeen, and the daughter of Evelyn and Gene Hebding.

Kathryn Mazur, Port Monmouth section of Middletown, has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Kean University, Union.

Matawan resident Matthew Stankiewicz has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University, South Orange, where he is majoring in business.

East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University announced the following local students named to the dean's list for the spring semester:

Linda C. Stehn, Aberdeen, a senior majoring in hospitality management;

Thomas J. Steinhart, Lincroft, a senior majoring in elementary education;

Jennifer A. Byrnes, Middletown, a senior majoring in speech pathology - audiology; and

Bryana K. O'Reilly, a junior majoring in elementary education.

Lafayette College, Easton, Pa., announced the following local students named to the dean's list for the spring semester:

The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Spring Lake Heights, announced the following local students who are recipients of The Brother Peter Mannion Friendly Sons of the Jersey Shore Foundation Grants-in-Aid:

Kyle Bowe, Mater Dei High School, New Monmouth section of Middletown; and Pat Brennan, Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft.

The Friendly Sons awarded $11,000 to 11 college-bound students of Irish heritage, with students selected from approximately 230 applications.

Dante Alighieri Women's Society of Central Jersey, Matawan, has announced the winners of its $2,000 annual scholarships based on outstanding academic records and essays on "What My Italian heritage Means to Me." Recipients are:

Katherine Ernst, Brick Township High School; and

Melanie Zimmerman, Monmouth Regional High School, Tinton Falls.

The winner of a $500 Merit Award is Marissa Devine, Freehold Township High School.

The Monmouth County Reading Council has announced the winners of the 2007 poetry contest. The local winner is:

Ania D. Wu, a second-grade student in Kathleen Vergaretti's class, at Cliffwood Elementary School, Cliffwood section of Aberdeen, for her piece, "Oh Chrysanthemum."

Winners received a certificate, first-place ribbon, and a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble. Winners also received a book, and a copy of "When a City Leans Against the Sky" signed by the author, poet Dr. Allan De Fina. The winners also read creation at Barnes & Noble, Holmdel.

Patrick Dean, a sixth-grade student at Cove Road School, Kimberly Fallon, a sixth-grade student at Middle Road School, and Ryan Labriola, a sixth-grade student at Beers Street School, all Hazlet, have been honored as an "Outstanding AAA School Safety Patroller of the Year." Each student was awarded a $150 savings bond and a plaque. Selection was based on leadership, dependability, academics, promptness, neatness and industriousness. Twenty-four students statewide were chosen for the award.
