The Bayshore Bandits baseball team returned to Marlboro over the Memorial Day weekend and successfully defended their title as champions in their age group. After winning the title as 11-year-olds last year, the Bandits marched through the 12-year-old division this year to repeat as champions. Although it certainly wasn't easy, the Bandits remained focused throughout the weekend, as they finished the tournament with a 5-0 record. After rolling through the three-game pool-play stage, the Bandits played two nail-biters on Monday, including going to extra-innings in the final, to take home the title. In the semifinal game, against a solid Holmdel Blue team, it took a two-run rally in the bottom of the last inning to nip the Hornets 8-7. It was a back-and-forth game that saw the Bandits go ahead 4-1, and then fall behind 7-4, before they clawed their way to the victory. The coaches were very impressed with the way the boys kept their heads in the game until they ultimately came out on top. In the afternoon final, the Bandits faced the host Marlboro Mustangs Gold team for the championship. In another close back-and-forth contest, the Bandits took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Mustangs showed a lot of heart by pushing across the tying run to force extra innings. Rather than be disheartened by allowing the Mustangs to tie the game, the Bandits staged a two-out, five-run rally in the top of the seventh to re-take the lead. This time, however, there was to be no comeback for the home team, as the Bandits set them down in the bottom of the inning to win the game and the title.

The Bandits' coaches were very proud of the boys for the way they pulled together over the weekend and played as a team. While there were several outstanding individual performances and plays over the weekend, it really took the combined effort of all the boys to win the championship. They also want to thank all the families who came out to support the boys, because they really helped to inspire the team.
