Concerts, walks slated at Sandy Hook during July

SANDY HOOK - Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook, will continue its summer programs with the free program "Have a Safe Trip! Enjoy Your National Parks" June 27 at 2 p.m.

The Silver Starlite Orchestra will perform big band music June 27 at 6 p.m. at beach area E. Gateway will continue its free beach concerts during July, beginning with Next Generation Soul July 4. The Cherubs will perform classic rock July 11, and The BethAnne Clayton Band will perform country rock July 18. Jobonanno & the Godsons of Soul will perform rock and roll July 25. All concerts are at 6 p.m. at beach area E.

Seining is set for June 28 and July 11, 13, 25 and 27 at 9 a.m. Reservations are required.

A "Night Prowl" will be July 14 at 8:30 p.m. and July 28 at 8 p.m. Attendees should bring a flashlight to explore a Hook habitat.

A Nike missile launch site tour will be July 17 at 4 p.m. beginning at the Nike missile north of the ranger station.

Canoe Sandy Hook Bay for children age 7 and older and families will be July 18 and 26 at 9 a.m. Canoes and life vests will be provided, and reservations are required.

A holly forest ramble will be July 19 at 10 a.m. and will explore the 64-acre holly forest.

"Hidden Harbor Defenses" will be held July 19 at 4 p.m. beginning at parking area K. The walk of the nine-gun battery will end at the observation deck. Attendees should bring binoculars and a flashlight.

"National Park Service Junior Naturalist" for children age 7-12 will be June 29 and July 20 at 9 a.m. A park ranger will lead a three-hour tour of the Hook's habitats such as the holly forest, dunes and beach. Attendees should bring sunscreen and insect repellent, and reservations are required.

A old dune trail walk will be held July 20 at 7 p.m. and will explore the barrier beach habitat through the dunes, holly forest and a freshwater pond.

A salt marsh walk will be held July 21 at 7 p.m. beginning at parking area L.

"Preserving Battery Gunnison" will be presented by The Army Ground Forces Association July 22 from noon to 4 p.m. at the battery gunnison.

A beach succession walk will be held July 31 at 10 a.m. beginning at Nike missile. Attendees will explore the wildlife and plants of beaches, dunes, and the holly forest.
