Walks, concerts slated at Hook during August

Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook, will offer a "Holly Forest Ramble" Aug. 1 and 9 at 10 a.m. Attendees will explore the Hook's 64-acre holly forest.

Beach concerts will be Aug. 1 with Tim McLoone & the Shirleys, Aug. 8 with Pat Guadagno & the Candle Brothers, Aug. 15 with The Robert Murdoch Band, Aug. 22 with band to be announced, and Aug. 29 with the Jazz Lobsters (last concert of the summer). All concerts are at 6 p.m. at beach area e. "Canoe Sandy Hook Bay" for children age 7 and older, individuals or families will be Aug. 2 and 15 at 9 a.m. Canoes and life vests will be provided, and reservations are required.

The National Park Service "Junior Naturalist" program for children age 7-12 will be Aug. 3 and 17 at 9 a.m. A park ranger will lead a three-hour exploration of Sandy Hook's habitats such as the holly forest, dunes and beach. Attendees should bring sunscreen and insect repellent. Reservations are required. An "Old Dune Trail Walk" will be Aug. 3 at 7 p.m., and Aug. 31 at 10 a.m., and consists of a one-mile walk through the dunes and holly forest to a freshwater pond.

A "Salt Marsh Walk" will be Aug. 4 and 24 at 7 p.m. beginning at parking area l. Attendees will explore a wetland salt marsh at Horseshoe Cove along Sandy Hook Bay. Seining in the bay will be Aug. 8 at 9 a.m. and will explore creatures living in the bay. Reservations are required. A "Night Prowl" will be Aug. 11, 17 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. Attendees should bring a flashlight to explore the Hook's habitat on the after-dark walk.

A beach succession walk will be Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. beginning at the Nike missile north of the ranger station. Attendees will explore beaches, dunes, and holly forest habitats. "Hidden Harbor Defenses" will be Aug. 16 at 4 p.m. beginning at parking area m. The walk will visit the nine-gun battery and end at the observation deck. Attendees should bring binoculars and a flashlight. "Battery Gunnison Preserved" will be Aug. 19 from noon-4 p.m. at the battery gunnison at Fort Hancock. Volunteers from the Army Ground Forces Association will be available to discuss the gunnison and answer questions.
