Field Day celebrates students' successes

On behalf of our students, staff and families, I would like to thank you for writing such a wonderful article in the Independent newspaper about our recent Field Day ("Autistic students have a field day in Aberdeen," June 20).

The Bayshore Jointure Commission's Field Day is a celebration of each student's successes and courage to challenge and overcome their fears and deficiencies.

Many parents were so impressed and thankful that you would take the time to write about our students and their opportunity to experience the joy of being recognized for a brief shining moment and feeling part of something larger than themselves.

Children with autism rarely judge others. Who's fatter? Richer? Smarter? For children on the autism spectrum these distinctions hold much less importance than people in our daily lives. In fact, children on the autism spectrum often see through surface appearances and discover the real person. This is what so impressed our school community of Bayshore Jointure Commission. Your article exemplified the true essence of a child.

Once again, my sincere appreciation to you and the entire staff of the Independent newspaper family.
