Uncommon 'Reflections' on the mundane

"Boatyards"
The Monmouth Museum is presenting the second installation in the New Jersey Emerging Artists Series in its Nilson Gallery.

Paul Lenz of Colts Neck, the second artist in the series, will show his photographs in an exhibit titled "Reflections," which will run through Sept. 9.

A gallery talk with the artist will take place Wednesday, Aug. 22, 7-8 p.m.

Lenz states about his work for "Reflections": "My goal as a fine art photographer is to create artwork which is thought-provoking, interesting and esthetically pleasing. The present show is a collection of images of very common and even mundane objects.

"Instead of viewing my object directly, I photograph its reflection from a variety of uneven surfaces. I use round, odd-shaped and broken Christmas balls, the mirror-like surface of floodlights, reflections from glass walls and windows of buildings, spoons, balloons, puddles and just about any other reflective surface which can create a new and interesting rendition of a common theme."

"Pine Trees"
Lenz's subjects are ordinary objects encountered daily.

"I try to create an artistic experience by looking at very traditional objects in untraditional ways," he said.

The Monmouth Museum is located on the Brookdale Community College campus, Newman Springs Road, Lincroft. The Main Gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $6, and free for members, Brookdale students and staff, and children under age 2.
