Audubon meeting, bird walk during September

The Monmouth County Audubon Society will hold its next meeting Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, White Street, Red Bank.

Michael Hogan, photographer and documentarian, will present "Natural Wonders of the Jersey Pines and Shore" at the meeting which is free and open to the public. He has canoed, camped and taken photos extensively in the Pine Barrens, and is involved with groups such as the Delaware Riverkeeper Network and The Nature Conservancy. The program features birds and wildflowers common to the Pine Barrens and shore regions, as well as rare flowers and species of birds such as warblers, raptors and migrating shorebirds.

The Society will hold a bird walk Sept. 15 at 9 a.m. at Manasquan Reservoir, Howell (rain or shine). The walk will be led by Bob Henschel, past president of the Society, and employee of the Monmouth County Park System at the reservoir. Attendees will walk a portion of the trail around the reservoir looking for birds such as warblers, orioles and tanagers and may spot a bald eagle. Visitors have seen the eagles nest-build, incubate eggs and raise young. The free trip is open to both members and nonmembers. Participants should bring binoculars and field guides and dress appropriately for the weather. Pets are not permitted.
