Wall: Eliminate benefits for committee members BY KAREN E. BOWES Staff Writer

| HOLMDEL - Committeeman Terence Wall received little response to a suggestion to cut the Township Committee's medical benefits.
At Thursday night's meeting, Wall asked that the committee members consider relinquishing their taxpayer-sup- plied benefits, a total savings of $57,000 per year, according to Wall.
"That's $60,000 you could put into roadwork," Wall said.
Although the lame duck committeeman is scheduled to leave office in January, Wall said he supported the idea five years ago along with an elimination of the committee's salary, which comes to about $4,000 per member and approximately $5,000 for the mayor.
"I voted in favor of eliminated benefits and suggested benefits and salary be eliminated," Wall said.
Wall's suggestion on Thursday never made it to a vote.
"There was no support it," Wall said, adding he "didn't push the issue."
Wall said he would like to see the committee treated like the Board of Education, volunteers who are elected but receive no benefits or salary.
At the meeting, Mayor Serena Di- Maso said she pays extra for her family's medical coverage.
"That's really not accurate," Wall said on Monday. "You pay perhaps $80 a month for family coverage … or $1,000 a year."
Why did Wall bring the topic up now?
"Some of the folks seem to take pages from Middletown," Wall said, referring to Middletown's recent decision to eliminate benefits for their committee members. "Perhaps they should look at this page as well. You don't only look at pages that are convenient. Most municipalities don't offer benefits."
