Entries now accepted for VFW contests

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2179 and its Ladies Auxiliary, Port Monmouth section of Middletown, have announced the annual "Voice of Democracy (VOD) Scholarship Program Contest," and "Patriot Pen Youth-Essay Contest," along with the VFW's "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" program. Deadline for submissions is Nov. 1.

The VOD program, themed, "My Role in Honoring America's Veterans," is an audioessay contest for students in grades nine through 12. The first-place winner is eligible for national scholarships ranging from $1,000-$16,000, and will compete against all other state first-place winners for a $30,000 scholarship, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The Patriot's Pen themed "Why I Am An American Patriot," is for students in grades six through eight. Students write 300-400 word essays expressing views on democracy, and the first-place winner receives a $10,000 savings bond and all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The VFW will also recognize the top elementary (grades K-5), junior high (grades six through eight), and high school (nine through 12) teacher of the year that teaches citizenship and education topics, and promotes America's history, traditions and institutions. Nominating individuals must submit the teacher's name on a nomination form, and 350 or less word description of why the nominee should be selected.
