Jazz, 'Campus Fridays' slated at Brookdale
Brookdale Community College, Newman Springs Road, Lincroft section of Middletown, will present an evening of jazz by Art Deco, its trio-in-residence, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. at the performing arts center.
The ensemble consists of Joe Accurso, Atlantic Highlands and trio founder; bassist Gary Mazzaroppi, Fair Haven; and guitarist Doug Clarke, Asbury Park. Tickets are $17, $15 for seniors, and $5 for Brookdale students with ID (may purchase up to two tickets). For more information, call the box office at (732) 224-2411.
The Brookdale Outreach, Business and Community Development will debut "Campus Fridays" Oct. 19, with a morning session from 10 a.m. to noon, and afternoon session from 1-3 p.m. Presenters include professors from Brookdale, Monmouth University, West Long Branch, and Kean University, Union.
Morning lectures include a choice from three offerings. "Dutch Treat" explores the life, work and world of the 17th century painter Vermeer. "New Insights, Classic Literature: Brave New World" examines whether Aldous Huxley foreshadowed practices and gadgets taken for granted today. "The Pursuit of Happiness" will help teach participants principles underlying the journey to happiness and how practicing the principals can transform lives.
Afternoon lectures include selections from "The Star of David, the Cross, the Crescent and the Crusades: Jews, Christians and Muslims - Then and Now," a historical perspective of the Crusades and the current state of Islamic-Jewish-Christian relations. "Your Body and Your Brain: A Personal GPS to Health and Wellness" explores traditional and nontraditional ways to a healthy lifestyle. "Broadway Musicals: From Oklahoma to Dreamgirls," will look at the Broadway musicals "Oklahoma," "Guys and Dolls," "Fiddler on the Roof," "Cabaret," "Purlie," and "A Chorus Line."
