Films, talks, 'Haunted Theater' slated at BCC
The international center at Brookdale Community College, 765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft section of Middletown, will present a film series beginning with "Pan's Labyrinth," Oct. 3 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
The Academy Award winning film set against the postwar repression of Franco's Spain is co-sponsored by Student Life and Activities in conjunction with the Latin Heritage Week. "The Agronomist" will be shown Oct. 14 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. The documentary presents Haitian human rights activist and radio journalist, Jean Dominique in revealing interviews leading up to his untimely assassination.
"The Devil Came on Horseback" will be shown Oct. 29 from 7-10 p.m. It exposes the tragedy in Darfur through the eyes of American witness and former U.S. Marine Captain Brian Steidel. A panel discussion will follow. "One Day in September" is scheduled for Nov. 13 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The documentary presents the story of the massacre of 11 Israeli athletes by a team of Palestinian terrorists during the 1972 Olympics in Munich. The film will be shown at main academic south building, room 100.
"Dr. Strangelove: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" completes the series Nov. 28 from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m., and 7-9 p.m. The Stanley Kubrick film is a dark comedy about a group of war-eager military men that plan a nuclear apocalypse. The center for World War II studies will present a series of war films beginning with "A Walk in the Sun," Oct. 9. The drama is the story of an American army platoon moving through the Italian countryside following the successful but bloody 1944 invasion of Italy. Code is XWWTS 164 F. "Sink the Bismarck" will be shown Nov. 27. The film recounts the eight-day battle to sink the British battleship Bismarck in 1941. Code is XWWTS 165 F. "The Wings of Eagles" will be shown Dec. 11. It stars John Wayne and is the story of Commander Frank "Spig" Wead, pioneer aviator turned Hollywood screenwriter. He joins the U.S. Navy despite a crippling pre-war spinal injury. Code is XWWTS 166 F. All films are at 7 p.m. Fee for any film is $5, and free for Brookdale students.
The center will also present three WWII programs this fall. Ryan Mauro, geopolitical analyst and founder of www.worldthreats.com will present "Rise of Fascism in the Middle East During WW II: Its Impact Then and Now," Oct. 16. Code is XWWTS 158 F. "Worst of the Worst: Battle for Huertgen Forest" will be presented by Leonard "Bud" Lomell, former U.S. Army Ranger, and Normandy Invasion hero Oct. 23. Huertgen Forest, Germany, was the setting for the most tragic battle of WWII. Lomell led a company of U.S. Army's 2nd Ranger Battalion during the battle and received the Presidential Unit Citation for valorous actions. Code is XWWTS 159 F. Barry Rosenzweig, former administrator U.S. Army Field Band, and music historian will present "Lifting the War Clouds: The Music of World War II" Oct. 30. He will provide a commentary on the music of the war by composers such as Irving Berlin and Glenn Miller, and singers such as Kate Smith and Frank Sinatra. Code is XWWTS 160 F. There is a fee for all programs, which are from 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Students from the college's technical theater will present the annual "Halloween Haunted Theater," Oct. 26-28 from 6-10 p.m. at the performing arts center. "Child friendly" tours are Oct. 27 and 28 from 2-4 p.m. Tours will be highlighted by music from "The Rocky Horror Show" scheduled at the center Nov. 9 and 10. Tickets are $7, and $5 for Brookdale students with valid ID (limit of two discounted tickets). Tickets for "no scare" tours are $5. All sales are at the door. A swing era dinner and dance "In the Mood," will be Nov. 9 from 7-11 p.m. at Gibbs Hall, Fort Monmouth, Eatontown. The Brookdale Big Band will perform tunes such as "Moonlight Serenade," and "String of Pearls." There will also be a cash bar, dinner and music and dancing throughout the evening. Price is $49 per person, and code is XWWTS 161 F.
Speaker on naval affairs J. Wandres will present "Combating the U-Boats: The Norden Broadcasts" Nov. 13. His presentation will feature actual recordings of selected Norden programs and a copy of a secret biographical history of U-boat officers. Code is XWWTS 162 F. Dr. David Ulbrich, professor of history, and military historian at Ball State University, Indiana, will present "Logistics in the Pacific War: Key to Victory," Dec. 4. He will discuss a strategy by the U.S. military in 1942 that vanquished the Japanese on every major Pacific island three years later, and what it took to win the Pacific War. Code is XWWTS 163 F.
