Ex-officer hurt at gun range

MIDDLETOWN - A man taking part in a routine qualification exercise with the Retired Officers Association at a township firing range accidentally fired a bullet in his own leg.

G. Kevin Calogera, 54, was holstering his weapon on Friday when he accidentally left his finger inside the trigger guard and pulled the trigger, discharging the gun, according to Middletown police.

Twice a year, retired police officers have to qualify their weapons in order to carry one, according to state law.

Calogera, who is an Old Bridge Township councilman, was able to walk away with just a minor wound after being taken to Jersey Shore University Hospital in Neptune.

There were four certified range officers at the firing range when the accident occurred.

"I just want to thank the Middletown police for being very professional," Calogera said. "They handled things promptly and with care."
