Applications are now available for the Inaugural Aberdeen Haunted 5K & Family Fun Run on Sunday, Oct. 28.

A New Jersey Grand Prix Event, the 5K run will be held on a USATF-certified course through the Strathmore section of Aberdeen, starting on Atlantic Avenue and Sixth Street, continuing onto Church Street, Darwin Way, Deerfield Lane, Drexel Lane, Lloyd Road, Line Road, and Cyprus Lane, and finishing at Aberdeen Town Hall.

The Family Fun Run will take place on a one-mile course starting at Aberdeen Town Hall, turning right on Church Street, down to Lloyd Road and circling back.

Entry fees for the 5K event are as follows: $15 by Oct. 19 for USATF-NJ members; $17 by Oct. 19 for nonmembers; $20 after Oct. 19 and on race day. The fee to enter the Fun Run is $5.

All pre-registrants will receive a Haunted 5K T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place overall males and females and in the following age groups: 14 and under, 15-19, and 10-year increments to 70 and over. All fun runners will receive finisher ribbons.

Participants can also register on-site on the morning of the event.

Jerry Izenberg, former columnist and sports reporter for The Star Ledger of Newark, will be the featured lecturer Oct. 18 at the third annual Jacob W. Needle Lecture in History. The free event will be held at Brookdale Community College, 765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft. Izenberg's topic will be "In From the Cold: The Story of the Eight Hall of Famers from the Newark Eagles Baseball Team of the Negro Leagues." His lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Warner Student Life Center, Navesink Rooms I and II. Parking is most convenient in lot 7.

St. Mary's Athletic Association will hold online sign-ups for 2007 winter basketball at www.active.com/eventdetail. cfm?eventid+1489157 for boys and girls in grades 2-8. Practices begin after Thanksgiving and games begin after Christmas. Cost is $75 for one child, $115 for two or more in a family.

Middletown Youth Athletic Association will hold tryouts for its boys fourth- and fifth-grade Monmouth Youth league travel teams. Tryouts will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Middletown South High School, and 6- 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Thorne Middle School. The organization will also be conducting sign-ups ups for its recreation basketball program open to boys and girls who are residents of Middletown and are in grades 2-9.
