Most of our relatives arrived in country legally
This is in response to Shirley Heredia's recent letter to the editor. It is not immigrants that the residents of New Jersey and other states are upset with. It is the "illegal," "undocumented" immigrants that most people are angry about. What part of these two words does not register?

Yes, almost all of us are descended from immigrants who came to this country for a better life. However, the big difference is that our relatives arrived legally, not illegally. In addition, those who are here illegally take away the opportunity of others who have applied appropriately to be allowed to migrate to this country. As you say, we are morally and legally obligated to educate all children. However, every dollar needed to educate illegal immigrant children could be put to use for the benefit of the offspring of legal residents. The same goes for medical care.

The fact that an illegal immigrant has given birth to a child while here illegally should not make the child a citizen. This leads to the problems we have seen where the illegal immigrant parent is found and deportation is attempted while the child is allowed to stay. This is ludicrous. By coming here illegally and having a child, they put themselves and their child in a precarious position. There is a responsibility to be taken by any adult who brings a child into the world. It is similar to the situation where a child slays his or her parents and then asks for the court's mercy because he or she is an orphan.

Our laws may guarantee citizenship to anyone born in this country but they were established long before countries worldwide had immigration limits. And those limits were established for good reasons.
