Candlelight House Tour set for Dec. 8 in Keyport

KEYPORT - Once again, visitors to the charming little borough will be treated to a tour of some of the Victorian architecture in town.

Settled in 1714 and established in 1830, Keyport boasts some of the most beautiful Victorian-era architecture on the Bayshore. As a result, a tour of the homes is a rare treat that many homeowners in town are happy to provide for visitors.

Jack Jeandron, borough historian and also the historian for the Keyport Historical Society, said the annual 2007 Candlelight House Tour, which is sponsored by the historical society, will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, 4-9 p.m.

Jeandron said that the borough has been holding house tours for many years, and two groups have taken turns running the event. The historical society ran the tours for about six years, then the Keyport Business Association (KBA) took the event over for about four years. Two years ago, the historical society began handling the event again.

He added that the society won't reveal the location of the seven houses on the tour ahead of time, but he did say that for the first time, there will be a couple of newer homes as well as the wonderful Victorians. In addition, the tour will visit one church and a house on the bay.

Jeandron noted that there are different houses on the tour each year. In addition, two vintage trolleys with guides will be transporting visitors the whole time.

The pickup point is at KBA headquarters at 59 W. Front St., across from Borough Hall.

Tickets, if purchased in advance, are $18, and $20 on the day of the tour. The price includes entertainment and light refreshments like cider and cookies served at the houses.

To purchase tickets or for more information, please call (732) 264-6119 or the Steamboat Dock Museum at (732) 739- 6390.
