Scenes of Christmas past
Anyone whose roots go back a few years in Red Bank remembers when artist Lloyd Garrison painted scenes of the town perched in his studio above Broad Street.

A holiday season scene of downtown Red Bank circa 1996 by Lloyd Garrison.
Garrison's paintings depict Red Bank, Shrewsbury, Holmdel and Rahway from the early 1960s to the present day.

He created his first Christmas painting and card of Red Bank in the 1960s, and captured a time when merchants knew shoppers by name, the town was decked out in holiday lights and bell-ringing Santas stood next to Salvation Army red kettles.

Garrison said the response to his first Christmas card was overwhelming. His plan was to do just one card, but he kept coming up with ideas and kept the tradition going for seven more years. Along the way, he created a Red Bank ornament that also proved popular.

Garrison has since moved his studio to Perrineville, but his prints of historic downtown Broad Street in Red Bank, as well as Holmdel and Shrewsbury, are available locally at Caesar's Creations, 68 Broad St., in Red Bank.
