Libraries launch historic archival resource Joint project puts Red Bank Register archive online
MIDDLETOWN - With the application of the latest digital technology, and the efforts of many individuals, users of the information superhighway will be able to view online the entire archive of the Middletown/Red Bank community newspaper The Red Bank Register, which published from 1871 through 1991.
To capture this "time capsule" of the region, Middletown Main Library and Red Bank Library have embarked on a collaborative effort titled "A Digitization Project: The Red Bank Register 1871- 1991" to digitize the entire The Red Bank Register microfilm collection.
Because of the complexity of this endeavor, the project has been broken down into four phases, the first of which has been completed.
The first phase, which begins with the very first edition of The Register, dated June 27, 1878, and continuing through October 23, 1947, is now up and running on the library Web site. To tour this archive, visit http://mtpl.org/rbr/. Subsequent phases of the archive will soon follow.
"An indexed digital local newspaper is of tremendous historical significance, and will be a time-saving tool for all researchers," said Library Director Susan O'Neal. "I'm excited and proud to offer this unique resource to the people of Middletown."
To help continue the work of this historical project, interested individuals may make tax-deductible donations to the library. Checks for the RBR Archive may be mailed to Middletown Township Public Library, 55 New Monmouth Road, Middletown, NJ 07748, or to the Red Bank Public Library, 84 West Front St., Red Bank, NJ 07701.
