'Tidy Shoelace' ordinance needed in Keyport
It's almost instinctive when we see a kid with an untied shoelace. It's not a question of "if" he will trip, it's "how soon" before he makes full-body contact with the sidewalk. Yes, it's inevitable that short, untied string will quickly do him in. If only he were aware or forewarned. Same goes for public officials and untidy, pay-to-play money loose ends.

Keyport ought to know, everyone else does. "Oh, your ex-mayor just recently went to jail, right?" As law-abiding citizens of Keyport, we are embarrassed; we try to cautiously step around it, like dog poop.

Or better yet, we urge to pass an ordinance like Councilman Joe Sheridan proposed last January to clearly warn others in office not to stumble. Only thing is, it is still - 12 months later - in the "proposal" stage. There is a promise afoot that it will be linked to campaign finance reform and passed in February; we'll see. Maybe "Tidy Shoelace" is too neat and tidy a title to nudge Keyport's mayor and council. Just the look and smell of such indictment reoccurrences on the front steps of any borough hall would result in prompt borough action, wouldn't one think?

Citizens in every community like Keyport want and are entitled to an honorable level of integrity and honesty from their elected governing bodies. If it takes an ordinance to assure properly tied laces or the absence of pay-to-play canine excrement, we welcome it.We just don't want to be again humiliated by greedy politicians relocating to Lewisburg, Pa.
