Abduction before a.m. commute

MIDDLETOWN - Shortly before 5 a.m. on Thursday Feb. 7, Police Officer RobertMcNair was dispatched in response to a report that a man had been assaulted and abducted as he was leaving for work.

When he arrived at the residence in the Port Monmouth section of the township, McNair found a 32-year-old man with a knife wound to his neck, according to a press release from the Middletown Township Police Department.

The resident reported that when he got in his car to leave for work that morning, a man who was hiding in the rear seat of the car put a knife to his throat and told him to drive.

The attacker was wearing a ski mask, and instructed the victimnot to look at him in the rear viewmirror and to keep driving and follow his directions.

According to police, it appeared the attacker was not familiar with the area as he directed him to drive through several side streets offWilsonAvenue and eventually to Schelley Drive, which becomes a dead end.

When the suspect realized he was entering a dead-end street, he instructed the victim to pull over at the intersection at Schelley Drive and Locust Terrace where a second car occupied by a male and female pulled behind them, according to the press release.

The man and woman approached the car and the victim sustained a 2-inch laceration to his neck when the attacker in the rear seat pushed the knife into his neck to get him to turn his head toward the man and woman outside the car so they could see his face, police said.

According to the victim, after looking at him, the pair realized he was not the person they expected.

Upon realizing they did not have the right person, they instructed the victim to put his head down and not to look back as the assailant and the two other people left and fled in the other car.

The victim then drove home and called police. He refusedmedical treatment at the scene by Port Monmouth First Aid.

The investigation into the incident is continuing and is being led by Detectives First Class Jeffrey Barner and PeterWhite and Detective Sgt. Stephen Dollinger.
