Middletown Library presents 'Lincoln at the Library' February marks the remembrance of America's Presidents in observances all across the country. To honor the memory of one of the nation's greatest leaders, Middletown Main Library has scheduled two consecutive weekly programs that highlight the accomplishments, personal and professional travails, and the exceptional wit of Abraham Lincoln.
The programs will be presented by Glenn LeBoeuf, a lifelong New Jersey resident, who is a sought-after speaker on historical topics and who has participated in the films "Glory" and "Gettysburg."
"Abraham & Mary Todd Lincoln: A House Divided" will take place Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 10:30 a.m. From a strange courtship of two people of different classes, temperaments and backgrounds (North and South), Abraham and Mary Todd endured a life together of near poverty, tragic deaths of children, divided families, confining fame, and the bloodiest war inAmerican history. Despite their differences, they held hands in the presidential box at Ford's Theatre looking forward to a peaceful, well-deserved retirement.
"Ten Moral Moments in the Life of Abraham Lincoln: His Lifelong Quest for the 'Better Angels' of His Nature" will take place Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m. As the storm clouds of war gathered around him, Lincoln's words at his first inaugural address urged his fellow countrymen, both North and South, to listen to "the better angels of our nature" to avoid a civil war. Few Americans ever lived these words as well as did our 16th president. This program will appeal to Lincoln enthusiasts and teenagers alike. Middletown Main Library is located at 55 New Monmouth Road. For more information, call (732) 671-3700, ext. 320 or email programs@mtpl.org.
