Aberdeen church celebrates heritage

ABERDEEN - St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, founded in 1925 and located in Aberdeen, is presenting, as a part of its African American History celebration, "Jazz - American Classical Music."

The program will feature live jazz performances by veteran New York jazz performer and producer Marge Elliot and her ensemble. Also featured will be classic live video performances of major jazz stars, including Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughn, Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck and others.

The evening will also feature an art sale of jazz-themed art prints, posters and photographs.

The church's community room - dubbed "The Christian Café" for the evening - will be decorated to give the feel of a jazz club but without alcohol and cigarettes. Light refreshments will be available.

The café will be open 7-10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 29. There is no admission charged. A free-will offering is requested. The proceeds will benefit the Youth Ministry.

St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church is located at 218 Delaware Ave. in the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen. For directions to the church, visit www.stmarkamezioncliffwood. org.
