BCC women repeat as Region champs
For the second straight year, the BrookdaleCommunityCollegewomen's basketball team is going to the junior college national championship.

The Jersey Blues, ranked No. 7 in the country among Division III colleges, won their second straight Region XIX title in decisive fashion Saturday when they beat Camden, 73-42. The Blues, co-coached by Marianne Campacci and Joanne Cobb, knocked offMiddlesex, 70-56, in Thursday's semi-final. As the No. 1 seed, the Blues had a bye to the semis.

The National Junior CollegeAthleticAssociation Division III National Tournament beginsMarch 13 inUtica,N.Y. BCC finished sixth at last year's national championships.

Camden did not know what hit them in Saturday's final.A22-0 tear by Brookdale at the start of the second half broke Camden's back after they had played the top seeds to a 28-28 draw in the first half.

"We were not playing strong defense," said Cobb. "Wemixed defenses in the second half and went to a triangle-and-two collapsing on their guards.

"Itwas one of our best halves of the year," she added.

That defensive change-up and the Blues balanced offense that had five players scoring double-figures, was too much for Camden to handle.

Sharing the ball has been a trademark of the 2007-08 Blues and they put on a clinic in the Region final.

Forward Sasha Fabrizio had her usual double-double, 14 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Kitora Jones had 14 points 12 rebounds and five assists. Forward Jamie Biddle had 10 points and five rebounds.

Erica Hoffman scored 13 points, five assists and Olivia Triano netted 10 hitting 2-3 from beyond the arc.

In the semi-final win over Middlesex, Keshia Taylor was all over the floor with 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Biddle, whose return from an early-season injury has been welcomed, contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds. Fabrizio chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds and Jones also had a fine all around game with 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Taylor had five points, seven rebounds and five assists in the championship final. She was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Fabrizio and Joneswere selected to the First Team and Triano, to the Second Team.

Brookdale will take a 23-2 record with it to theNJCAA.Cobb believes the teamis better prepared forwhat itwill be up against at the national championships than it was last year. The Blues have players like Fabrizio, Biddle and Triano back from last winter's sixth place team. They know what to expect and can pass that on to their teammate.
