Dearborn goes 'green' in more than produce
HOLMDEL - Dearborn Market, known for it's fresh green produce since 1925, is "going green" in several new ways, ranging from recycling plastic plant pots to offering a seminar on composting.
Already under way is the recycling of all greenhouse plastic pots, flats and other plastic garden-related growing products, according to a press release from the market. Customers will be encouraged to return their plastic pots and flats from their plant material purchased at Dearborn throughout the year.
Dearborn will be working with a local vendor that will take the items to be recycled into various building materials, including decking, railing and fencing made from reclaimed and recycled waste wood fiber and reclaimed plastics. Plastic pot and flat recycling bins will be located in the Garden Center for dropoff.
According to Dearborn, the Produce Department will replace plastic produce bags with biodegradable bags, cutting down on landfill waste.
Plans for the future call for the introduction of reusable shopping bags that will enable customers to skip the paper or plastic bag at checkout. The bags will be available to customers free of charge for a limited time promotion and will then be offered for sale for a nominal fee. The market plans to offer incentives for reusing the bags.
Other environmentally friendly initiatives include a free seminar on composing to be held Saturday,April 19, at 1 p.m., to educate customers about recycling many food wastes and other commonly found household items such as newspapers, dryer lint and more into rich composted soil for a beautiful garden this spring. Space is limited, and reservations can be made by calling (732) 264-0256.
