Regional school budget continues its losing streak

ABERDEEN - Voters once again defeated the proposed Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District budget onApril 15.

The $63.3 million school budget was voted down by a margin of 232 votes this year. Of a total of 2,438 votes cast, 1,335 voters said no to the budget while 1,103 cast yes votes.

Last year, voters also rejected the proposed $62 million school budget by more than 60 percent, casting 1,365 no votes to 844 affirmative votes.

They also returned two incumbent Board of Education members and elected a newcomer to the regional Board of Education.

This year's budget, which called for a proposed tax levy of $46,805, 204, failed with 1,335 no votes, or 54.76 percent of the votes cast, rejecting the budget question on the ballot.

Incumbents Charles Kenny, Matawan, and Jan Rubino, Aberdeen, were reelected to their respective posts on the Board of Education. Kenny, who ran unopposed for his seat, received a total of 499 votes while Rubino captured 1,105 votes.

Rubino's running mate, Martin Ruprecht, also of Aberdeen, won a spot with 986 votes, ousting incumbent Kenneth Aitken, who received 759 votes.
