Town provides proper disposal for American flags

ABERDEEN- TheAberdeen Township Public Works Department is collecting American flags that are no longer suitable for display, for distribution to organizations that performapproved disposal ceremonies.

According to the U.S. Flag Code, any American flag that is worn, damaged or tattered beyond repair should be retired in a respectful and dignifiedmanner. The preferred method is burning which, in this case, signifies purification and rebirth.

The Ceremony forDisposal ofUnserviceable Flags was approved by The American Legion in 1937. Today, theAmerican Legion andBoy Scouts ofAmerica are among the organizations performing flag retirement ceremonies.

Flags can be dropped off at the Public Works garage, Lenox Road off CliffwoodAvenue, weekdays between 6:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., or the third Saturday of themonth between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The flags should be placed in the red, white and bluemailbox marked "Flags."
