Man charged after colliding with child on scooter

ABERDEEN - Police arrested a township man after he allegedly struck a child riding a scooter, and the man was also charged with driving while intoxicated.

Donald A. Seaman, 51, of Riverdale Drive in Cliffwood, was operating his 1990 Ford pickup truck north on Locust Street when he collided with a 12-year-old operating a moped-type scooter at approximately 5:35 p.m. on April 18, police said.

Responding officers found the child lying on the ground in front of the truck screaming and crying, police said. Aberdeen Township First Aid and Rescue Squad and MONOC paramedics responded, and the victim was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

Patrol Officer FrankMaisano responded to the scene and while he was speaking with Seaman deduced that he was intoxicated. Seaman became uncooperative and combative toward the officer, police said.He resisted the officer's efforts to take himinto custody and was subdued with the assistance of other officers.

Seaman was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, possession of CDS (controlled dangerous substance) while operating amotor vehicle, unlicensed driver, driving while suspended, resisting arrest, possession of CDS and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Bail was set at $15,000 with 10 percent option, and Seaman was released on bail.

The crash is being investigated by Patrol Officer Brian Alberti with assistance from Patrol Officer Kathleen Sisti, Sgt. Theodore Sigismondi, Sgt. Frank Sigismondi and Detective Sgt.Michael O'Dwyer. Monmouth County Serious CollisionAnalysis Response Team (SCART) and the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office are also assisting.

Witnesses to the accident are asked to call the traffic safety unit of the Aberdeen Police Department at (732) 583-4200, ext. 222.
