180 committed to ending violence, sexual abuse April is both National SexualAssault Awareness Month and National Child Abuse Prevention Month, when people are asked to focus on these two important issues that have such a devastating impact on communities. The facts are stark: one in every six women will be sexually assaulted during her lifetime, with women between the age of 18 and 22 four times more likely to be victimized. Crimes involving domestic violence also continue to be a serious problem, with minors either witnessing or involved in one-third of all domestic assaults.
At 180 Turning Lives Around Inc., a Monmouth County nonprofit institution dedicated to ending domestic violence and sexual abuse, we strive to help victims - most of them women and children - get the protection they need. We offer a variety of programs and services including crisis intervention, advocacy, transitional housing, counseling and education, to help people who had little hope turn their lives around. Our 24-hour crisis hotlines are lifelines that provide immediate counseling and critical information to callers and are often the first step taken in establishing a life free of fear and lifethreatening danger.
For children affected by family violence and abuse, 180 offers Amanda's Easel, a nationally recognized program that uses art, play and dance/movement therapies to help children and their nonoffending parents cope with traumatic experiences and begin to heal.
At 180, we believe that change is always possible. If you or your child need help, please call our 24-hour domestic violence hotline at (732) 264-4111, our Rape Hotline at (732) 264-7273 or 2nd Floor youth help line at (888) 222-2228. It could save a life.
