Poricy Park in Middletown benefited from the Eagle Scout projects of Ryan J. Clapp and David A. Epps, acquiring a new bridge for the Cotton Tract and a new boardwalk at the fossil beds. The Scouts are members of BSA Troop 32, River Plaza. Clapp, a senior at Middletown High School South, replaced a collapsed bridge at the Cotton Tract on the multiuse trail crossing Poricy Brook. Epps, a junior at Middletown High School South, constructed and installed a 40-foot boardwalk in Poricy's fossil beds that will provide access to this section of the fossil beds for people with disabilities.
The Middletown Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau will hold a child safety seat checkpoint 3-7 p.m. Aug. 22 at Middletown Police headquarters, Route 35 and Kings Highway. The purpose of the checkpoint is to educate the public on the proper way to install a child restraint as well as to check the fitness of the restraint itself. The checkpoint is open to the general public, and no appointments are necessary. For more information, call 732-615-2045.

The travel group of St. Mary's Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown, is sponsoring a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico City, Mexico, Dec. 9-14. Reservations must be made by Aug. 22, and cost is $1,399 plus a $250 airport fee (approximate). The trip will feature tours and a Mass at the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Holmdel Township Office of Parks and Recreation will hold the annual Holmdel Community Day 2-8 p.m. Sept. 27 at Cross Farm Park, Holmdel (rain date Sept. 28). The free event will feature food vendors, craft vendors, fireworks, rides and other activities. Volunteer opportunities are available. Registration is now being accepted for a trip to see the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, New York City, 2 p.m. Nov 7. Price is $49 for Holmdel residents and $54 for nonresidents and includes bus transportation. The bus will depart from the Holmdel Senior/ Community Center, Crawfords Corner Road. Holmdel Scout Troop 331 held an Eagle Court of Honor at Holmdel Community Center on June 8 for Eagle Scouts Peter H. Aldermeshian and Steven G. McMullen. The event celebrated the Eagle Scouts' completion of their community service projects on the Green Trail at Cheesequake State Park.

The travel group of St. Mary's Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown, will sponsor a trip to the Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Show at the Hilton Casino, Atlantic City, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Sept. 9. Reservations must be made by Aug. 31. The cost is $24, which includes transportation, show, $18 in coin and a $5 food credit. The Calico Cat Cupboard of Holmdel Community United Church of Christ is trying to provide each child with a shoe store certificate and new or gently used back-toschool outfit from Sept. 1 through Oct. 10. The church, located at 40 Main St., Holmdel, will offer a Faith and Fitness group 6:30 p.m. Thursdays. Attendees will take walks, runs and bike rides through various local parks, and examine a lesson from Tom Hafer's book "Faith and Fitness: Diet and Exercise." The first Masonic District 17 "Chili Cook Off" will be held 1 p.m. Sept. 6 at Caesarea Lodge No. 64, Third and Osborne streets, Keyport. There will be a "public choice" entry and competitions in three categories: mild, medium and "Death by Chili." Tickets are $10, and attendees will receive eight chili cups for tasting each chili entry entered by each Masonic lodge in the district. St. Lawrence Church, 109 Laurence Parkway, Laurence Harbor, is seeking vendors for its flea market, to be held 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 6. Donations (except clothing) in good condition are also being accepted. The cost is $20 per space, and tables will be provided, inside parish hall and out side parking lot. The Keyport Historical Society will present

Finding & Researching a Sunken Wreck Off the New Jersey Coast" by Dan and Terry Lieb at 8 p.m. Sept. 8. The program offers a look at the world of diving and discovering historic shipwrecks, and will be held at the Steamboat Dock Museum, Broad Street, Keyport.
